Chapter Fourteen

DEANNA WENT TO CHECK on the Sli again after Worf and Simon Tarses left the lounge. Captain Picard had told her the Federation Council considered it important to establish diplomatic ties with the Sli. She was busy with the Prospector investigation, but she also tried to take time to communicate with the Sli. But the Sli weren’t responding to empathic probes or the new translator.

She went to Ten-Forward next. Ensign Ro was probably still there, and she could find out about the rumor, relax for a while, and have that chocolate sundae all at the same time.

Deanna was already braced to ward off the emanations of the Sli, but she tightened her defenses before entering the lounge. Emotions were keyed higher than normal among the crew, and in addition to Tarses’, there had been dozens of unusual incidents reported. All were relatively minor, though, and Deanna couldn’t fault the Sli for being frightened and doing what came naturally to protect themselves. If only she could communicate Starfleet’s peaceful intentions, then the Sli would know they were safe.

Ten-Forward was full, and the voices and laughter seemed louder than usual. Guinan was silently nodding at a Tricon crew member who was trying to tell her a story. He kept forgetting what he wanted to say, tangling himself into knots by going off on punning tangents.

Deanna listened for a few minutes, amused.

“Can I do something for you, Counselor?” Guinan asked. The Tricon shrugged and turned to Ensign Puckee, who was sitting on the other side of him, starting his story all over again.

“Is Ensign Ro still here?”

“No,” Guinan said. “She left not long ago.”

Deanna nodded. “Maybe she’s in her quarters.” She continued to look at the hostess, wondering if she should talk to her about the investigation. Guinan was intuitive, and Deanna had nothing else to try at the moment.

“Anything else I can do for you?” Guinan asked, turning her head slightly.

“Yes, thank you.” Deanna liked being around Guinan. She emanated a warm calm that was soothing to her empathic senses. “I’d like a chocolate sundae and an answer to a question.”

“The sundae’s coming right up. Would you like that answer first?”

Deanna smiled. “Yes. Did you hear any rumors today about our investigation into the explosion on the Prospector?”

Guinan nodded, folding her hands in front of her. “Ensign Ro mentioned it. You suspect Enterprise crew members might somehow be involved.”

“Not really.” Deanna slid onto a stool at the counter. “But we have to investigate every possibility. Do you know how she heard about it?”

Guinan blinked. “Apparently there is a loose-lipped Ferengi on board.”

Deanna quickly looked up. “Mon Hartog?” She let out her breath, shaking her head. “Worf was right.”

“I see. It was supposed to be covert information.” Guinan glanced around the room. “Well, you’re too late, Counselor. Everyone in this room knows about it.”

“I figured that, since Tarses knew.”

Guinan turned to the replicator and pressed two places on the panel. She had worked out several chocolate sundae recipes that Deanna particularly liked.
